According to best estimates available, the earth is now inhabited by more than 6 billion people. Different though we may be, we have many things in common: all of us have been born and all of us will die; we all eat and sleep and work; we love our families and friends; we experience joy and sorrow. We are alike in many other ways, too. However, nothing is more common or more universal than the desire to be happy. We all seek happiness.

Are we really happy? The experts argue that if people were as happy as they claim, we wouldn’t have skyrocketing rates of suicide, child abuse, homicide, theft, alcoholism, divorce and the like.

They further argue that most of the people are claiming to be happy when they are not. Many people are blinded to their predicament by the very illusion that causes people to represent themselves as “satisfied.” They are not conscious of how desperate they are.
