The quadricentennial of the great Bard of Avon has been
observed very recently, in 2016. Yet the staging of Shakespeare’s
plays continue unabated over the world—in diverse cultures and
in a variety of modes. Such is the influence of “[t]he greatest
genius that perhaps human nature has yet produced” as Coleridge
has once remarked. The range and depth of Shakespeare’s plays
and its universality continues to enthrall audience across the
globe. In the 21st century, Shakespeare is more familiar to the
general public with the celluloid versions of his plays, which falls
under the genre of ‘adaptations’.
