CELEBRATING 800 YEARS

Francis’ Rule of 1223 & Christmas at Greccio 1223
By Arokiam John OFM

Introduction

The year 1223 marked two defining moments in the Franciscan tradition—the formal approval of Francis of Assisi’s Later Rule (Regula Bullata) and the first re-enactment of the Nativity at Greccio. Both events embodied Francis’ Gospel-inspired vision, shaping the Franciscan way of life, mission, and evangelization for centuries to come. Now, 800 years later, these milestones continue to speak to the modern world, reaffirming the enduring relevance of living the Gospel.

In response to the Franciscan Centenary celebrations (2023–2026), Franciscan Vision Global Summit (FVGS) 2023 was organized as a worldwide online initiative, embracing the call for synodality and unity within the Franciscan family. This book, the first in a four-volume series, brings together key reflections from FVGS 2023, focusing on the Later Rule and the Christmas at Greccio. Through diverse voices from around the world, it seeks to deepen the understanding of Franciscan spirituality and inspire a renewed commitment to Gospel living today.
